Sharpness and smoothness: what is the difference?
Sharpness describes how easily a blade cuts through beard hair. A very sharp blade usually needs fewer strokes and works well on coarse or dense growth. At the same time, it is less forgiving of excess pressure or an inconsistent technique.
Smoothness describes how the blade feels on your skin during and after shaving. A smooth blade feels calm and controlled and may be more comfortable on sensitive skin. However, smooth does not automatically mean less sharp: a good blade can cut very efficiently while still gliding comfortably over the skin.

Which razor blade suits your beard?
- Sensitive skin and a light beard: Start with Tiger Platinum, Shark Platinum, Derby Premium, Mühle or Merkur.
- Normal beard and a versatile blade: Astra Superior Platinum, Dovo Super Platinum or either Gillette 7 O'Clock version are good starting points.

- New to safety razors: Do not automatically start with the sharpest blade. A controllable medium-sharp blade makes it easier to learn the correct angle and pressure.
How to test razor blades properly
- Use the same safety razor. A different razor changes the blade gap, angle and skin feel, making the comparison less meaningful.
- Keep your preparation consistent. Use the same shaving soap or cream and prepare your beard in a similar way each time.
- Do not judge a blade after one shave. If it feels comfortable, give it two or three shaves. The first shave can feel different from the next ones.
- Shave without additional pressure. Especially sharp blades should cut through the hair rather than being pressed across the skin.
- Pay attention to three things. How easily does the blade cut the hair? How does your skin feel immediately afterwards? How long does the blade remain comfortable?
- Stop the test if it feels uncomfortable. If a blade tugs, scratches or repeatedly causes irritation, there is no need to keep using it.
Make a brief note of sharpness, skin feel and closeness after each shave. After trying only a few blades, you will usually recognise whether you prefer the mild, balanced or very sharp end of the range.
How often should you change a razor blade?
There is no fixed number of shaves. Beard strength, shaving area, number of passes, the razor you use and how you care for the blade all influence its useful life. Replace the blade as soon as it starts tugging, requires more pressure or feels noticeably rougher on the skin.
Rinse your safety razor thoroughly after shaving and leave it open to dry. Do not wipe the cutting edge with a towel, as this can damage it.
