Beard oil or beard balm? Which one is right for your beard?

Beard oil or beard balm—which one do you actually need? We get this question quite often in our shop. And the answer is not simple: one is not necessarily better than the other.
Both products condition your beard and can make dry beard hairs softer and more supple. The main difference lies in the consistency and the desired result: beard oil is liquid and lightweight, while beard balm is firmer and additionally gives the beard some structure and control.
What suits you best therefore depends on your beard, your skin and, above all, the feel you prefer during your daily grooming routine.
What does beard oil do?
Beard oil is probably the classic among beard care products. It consists of a blend of various conditioning oils and is easy to distribute through the beard.
Its main purpose is the care of beard hair and skin. A few drops are usually enough to make the beard softer and give it a well-groomed, natural look.
Beard oil is particularly interesting if:
- you want to care for your beard and the skin underneath
- you want to make dry or brittle beard hairs softer and more supple
- you prefer a lightweight product
- you do not need additional hold
- you want to give your beard a well-groomed, natural shine
Beard oil can be distributed well through the lengths and ends, especially with a longer beard.
What does beard balm do?
Beard balm generally serves a similar purpose, but has a significantly firmer consistency. In addition to conditioning oils, a classic balm contains solid ingredients such as beeswax and plant-based butter.
It therefore not only conditions the beard, but also gives it some structure and light hold.
Beard balm is particularly suitable if:
- you want to combine care and styling
- you want to tame stray beard hairs somewhat
- you want to give your beard more structure
- you prefer a richer consistency
- you want light hold without using beard wax
You should not expect the same hold as from a hair styling product. Beard balm does not keep the beard rigidly in place. Instead, it helps tame individual hairs and makes the beard look somewhat more controlled overall.

Beard oil or beard balm for a short beard?
This is where it gets interesting, because there is no one-size-fits-all rule.
For a short beard, beard balm can be pleasant to use if you want to tame individual unruly hairs and give your beard a neat shape. Especially with coarse beard hair, even a small amount of balm can make a visible difference.
If, on the other hand, the skin under your short beard is particularly dry or you want to feel as little product in your beard as possible, beard oil may be the more comfortable choice.
The length of the beard alone should therefore not be the deciding factor.
And what is better for a long beard?
Many men like to use beard oil for longer beards. The liquid oil is easy to distribute throughout the beard and also reaches the lengths and ends.
A longer beard can also benefit from beard balm – especially if it needs more control or individual hairs stick out prominently.
The same applies here: care and a light feel favour beard oil, while additional structure and control favour beard balm.
Can you use beard oil and beard balm together?
Yes – and this can certainly make sense, especially for a longer or dry beard.
The beard oil mainly provides care, while the beard balm then adds some structure and control.
The only important thing is to use small amounts. If you apply a generous amount of beard oil and then work in a lot of balm as well, your beard can quickly look heavy or greasy.
A simple routine would be:
- Wash your beard and dry it lightly.
- Distribute a few drops of beard oil between your hands.
- Massage it evenly into your beard and skin.
- Let it absorb briefly.
- Warm a small amount of beard balm between your hands.
- Work it into your beard, then shape it with your hands or a beard brush.
However, you certainly do not need to use both products. For many beards, either a good beard oil or a beard balm is completely sufficient.
How much beard oil or beard balm do I need?
The rule here is: start with a small amount and add more if needed.
For beard oil, just a few drops are often enough for a short beard. The longer and thicker your beard becomes, the more you can use.
With beard balm, you can start with an amount about the size of a pea. Rub the balm thoroughly between your palms until it softens, then work it into your beard.
After a few applications, you will usually quickly get a feel for how much your beard actually needs.
Beard oil or beard balm – our recommendation
If you mainly want care, softness and the lightest possible feel, we would recommend beard oil.
If, on the other hand, you want to combine care with some structure and control, beard balm is probably the better choice.
And what if you want both? You can easily combine oil and balm.
Ultimately, personal preference also plays a major role. Some people like the light feel of beard oil, while others prefer the firmer consistency of a balm.
That’s why our tip is: Try out what makes your beard feel best to you.
